Arts Dispatch would be tracking Esperanza Spalding regardless -- that she's from Portland and the official ambassador of the Portland Jazz Festival just adds to the pleasure.
The NewsHour on PBS featured Spalding on Thursday, and though I thought the segment (more than six minutes) was on the fragmentary side perhaps, it's still well worth a look, if you're interested in jazz at all. I don't have a good explanation for what sounds so fresh and right about Spalding's music, but maybe some of you can help.
